What
is Scratch?
Scratch is a programming language
that allows students to program interactive media. Scratch was created by the
Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab.
What
are the benefits of using Scratch in the gifted support classroom?
Creative thinking and systematic
reasoning are just a few of the skills students develop as they learn to
code. Beginning in grades 2 and 3 students are familiarized with the
Scratch interface and learn to create scripts. Throughout grades 4, 5 and
6 students learn more advanced coding and have the opportunity to create layered,
interactive projects.
What are we doing in the classroom?
Students in grades 4 and 5 have been challenged to create their Ultimate Scratch Project. The project rubric calls for an interactive and original program. Student ideas include: animated life-cycles, informational animation about bullying, a game about healthy eating, and animated poetry.
